The Civic Forums

Background

The Project

Ahali will establish a number of Civic Forums that are profession-specific (i.e. architects, lawyers, pharmacists, social workers), and issue-specific (i.e. Arab-Jewish relations, education, democratic culture). For example Ahali is currently planning to launch a Journalists Forum and an Architects Forum where individuals will gather to discuss and strategize in order to stimulate citizen interest, cooperation and collective action. Issue specific forums will discuss issues of importance to the Arab community such as the future of education and democracy for Arab citizens. Other forums assembled will bring together professionals to strategize and contribute to the development of our particular projects. An Oral History Forum and Agricultural Forums, for example, would provide guidance and support for our initiatives, and increase the community's participation in our programs.

Goals:

  • To provide a framework for deliberation and activism for individuals or groups on issues that concern them deeply;
  • To increase the culture of civic participation within the Palestinian minority in Israel;
  • To develop concrete strategies that address the problems facing the various sub-communities within the Palestinian minority of Israel.

Support for this Project will enable Ahali to:

  • Organize meetings of individuals and groups with common interests and shared professions;
  • Publish papers outlining the main points of the forum discussions;
  • Follow-up with Forum decisions and pursue agreed upon strategies.
