Promoting Grassroots Activism Among the Palestinian Minority in Israel
Ahali is an independent not-for-profit organization established in
1999 to strengthen grassroots activism among Palestinian citizens in
Israel. Ahali works through community organizing, used as a mean of
struggle to obtain full citizenship and minority rights and thus
ensuring equal distribution of national resources.
Striving for creating a more democratic, pluralistic, equal and just
society, Ahali, meaning "people in community", has developed
a range of innovative programs to empower the community and give voice
to the unique experience of the Palestinian minority in Israel, who comprise 20% of the
population.
As a community development organization, Ahali supports community
activists from various interest groups such as women, farmers,
artisans, youth, parents, students and assists in creating frameworks
for activism.
For Ahali, the term "community development" implies
encouraging members of society to analyze their situation as
individuals and as a collective and identify the community needs
accordingly. The following stage involves active efforts to improve our
community's socio-economic conditions within the broader national,
social and political context.
Ahali conceptualizes its goals as follows:
To increase political and social awareness of the Palestinian
population in Israel so that people work individually and
collectively to improve their personal situation and collective
conditions;
To assist the Palestinian population in Israel in developing the
tools required in bringing about economic, social and political
transformation;
To raise the status of Arab women by enrolling them to all
economic, social and political activities, especially regarding
their participation in decision making processes within the family
and the community;
To empower social, economic, professional, organizational skills
of Palestinians as a basis for improving their competitiveness- both
at the political and economic level;
Ahali is:
Encouraging local governance, active involvement in community building and civil society
initiatives;
Organizing and assisting Palestinian grassroots groups in Israel by
creating networks;
Fostering equal and balanced relations between Arabs and Jews in Israel and
encouraging debates among them;
Promoting civic democratic values and diversity;
Developing effective mobilizing strategies that increase the role and
influence of the Palestinian minority in policy making.
